How to Clean Ceramic and Glass Utensils and Keep them Looking as Good as New
Have you invested in a ceramic or glass tea set? Perhaps you have a luxury glass set that you absolutely adore and would love to see handed down to younger generations in the future. Many people treasure their utensils and would love to ensure they last for as long as possible. Unfortunately, not many of them know how to care for their ceramic or glass utensils. Their utensils end up stained, scratched, or damaged in other ways and they find that they soon have to replace them with a new set.
If you want to hold on to your utensils for as long as possible, try the tips below to clean and care for them and avoid damaging them.
- Start with your own hands: Before you start cleaning the ceramic or glass set, it is important to check your hands. Clean your hands before you handle the set. Dirty hands can leave greasy prints on the utensils, which will make them look dirty when they dry up. It is also important to take off your jewelry. Rings, bracelets and other jewelry worn on your hands can scratch your utensils. These scratch marks will be permanent marks on your utensils that make them look aged and tacky. They won’t be as attractive as they were when you first bought them.
- Use gentle cleaning products: You don’t need special cleaning products to clean your ceramic and glass utensils. In fact, lukewarm water and gentle soap are enough. Avoid using scouring pads to scrub the utensils. Scouring pads are abrasive and will result in permanent scratches. Harsh cleaning products such as scouring powder and harsh cleaning fluids will cause permanent damage to the utensils.
- Use baking powder to remove stains: Beverage stains, as well as marks from hand patches, are inevitable with the use of ceramic and glass utensils. You don’t need harsh chemicals or a scouring pad to get rid of the stains. You can avoid damaging your utensils and get rid of stains by using baking soda. Dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda into lukewarm water. Place the stained utensils in the solution and leave them for 2 to 3 minutes. Use a soft pad to gently scrub the stains. Rinse the utensils with clean water and pat them dry or set them aside to drip dry.
You can use the same treatment on your silverware to avoid staining and keep them looking bright. So if you served tea or coffee with a Turkish coffee spoon, for example, you can clean them in the same way.
Keep these little tricks in mind to clean and care for your utensils. You’ll be happy years from now when they are just as bright and attractive as when you first bought them.
